Conservation & Cultivation of Medicinal Plants

“We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”

Project Prakruti aims to revive the ancient tradition of medicinal plants (as cited in the Rig-Veda) while providing a sustainable livelihood for local communities. We are addressing the depletion of biodiversity by cultivating these vital herbs on farmland.

The Context

Why This Matters

Traditional Knowledge

The Problem

India has a rich heritage of natural medicine. However, habitat destruction and urbanization are causing the rapid depletion of these plant species. Over 70% of plant collections involve destructive harvesting (roots/bark), which threatens biodiversity.

The Solution

We cannot rely solely on dwindling forest reserves. The sustainable alternative is cultivation. Project Prakruti encourages farmers to grow medicinal and aromatic plants, providing them with an additional income source while protecting wild species from extinction.

Our Strategy

A Three-Phase Approach

We have designed a complete ecosystem from seed to market.

Phase 1

Nursery

Setting up high-tech nurseries (Greenhouse/Polyhouse) to produce genetically improved quality seedlings. This ensures farmers get the best start without the high cost of raising seedlings themselves.

Phase 2

Cultivation

Establishing cultivation units on farmland. We aim to support around 500-600 units over 5 years. This includes preparing land, irrigation, and utilizing proper growth regulators for maximum yield.

Phase 3

Processing

Creating forward linkages through Post-Harvest Management. We establish processing units with Solar Dryers and Distillation equipment to convert raw herbs into value-added products like essential oils and extracts.

Impact

Health & Livelihood

Project Prakruti is not just about plants; it is about people.

  • Economic Growth: Offering a profitable alternative to traditional uneconomic crops for small and marginal farmers.
  • Holistic Health: reviving the connection between Medicinal Plants, Yoga, and Ayurveda to improve physical and mental well-being.
  • Biodiversity: Reducing pressure on wild forests by satisfying market demand through cultivated sources.
